  • Maths

At Hermitage Primary School, our maths curriculum is designed to provide a broad and balanced education that meets the needs of all children.

Our curriculum for maths aims to ensure that all pupils:

    • enjoy mathematics. We are positive about mathematics and strive to ensure that children feel confident in their own ability and want to learn.
    • become fluent in mathematics. We promote varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
    • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, investigating relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
    • can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

At Hermitage Primary School we use White Rose Maths which is a widely used, comprehensive maths teaching and learning scheme designed to support the national curriculum from early years upwards.

    White Rose Maths:

    • Breaks national curriculum objectives down into manageable teaching blocks and "small steps" across the autumn, spring, and summer terms.
    • Focuses on achieving a deep, long-lasting understanding of mathematical concepts rather than just memorizing procedures.
    • Encourages using physical objects, drawings, and abstract symbols to build conceptual understanding.

    NCETM Mastering Number Programme

In Reception and KS1 our maths work is enhanced with regular sessions from NCETM Mastering Number Programme which is a maths teaching initiative in England designed to build secure number sense and calculation fluency.

We also use many other resources such as Times Tables Rock Stars and Numbots.
